Toxic Shock Make-Up

A tired dull face often looks worse when made-up, but the prospect of going out bare-faced is a far more terrifying thought. Because make-up is now so fantastically subtle, you should have no excuse for looking anything but bright-eyed and bushy-tailed.

The gold rule is to avoid caking your face with cosmetics, however desperate you might be feeling. The most important step before putting on any make-up at all is to get your skin smooth and hydrated by using an exfoliator and moisturizing mask. Also put some lip balm or petroleum jelly on your lips to plump them up, ready for lipstick or gloss.

Some well-know `skin perkers` do have remarkably enlivening effect. A few of the formulas have been around for years and held in highest regard by television personalities and make-up artists alike. Ask at the counter of your favourite brand if they have any `instant lift` beauty products. They may vary from face masks to fluis that you apply just before make-up.

Although investing in complexion-tinting foundations and what are grandly called `pre-foundation primers` is tempting, the best way to eradicate a tired face and fake a healthy glow is to apply foundation in very thin layers only where it is most needed.

Other than using a cosmetic sponge, which wastes foundation absorbing it, the best way to apply foundation is to put a little blob on the back of the hand, near the thumb joint, and slowly build up the layers by blending it with your fingers. Keep make-up natural and clean looking. If your face lets you down, beautifully clean, shiny hair will help distract from your toxic complexion.
